I had the privilege of sitting down with Amy from Stella Bloom Designs to discuss her booming business, see her adorable studio, and of course how she finds balance in her life as a business owner and a mom of 2 adorable kiddos.

Here is what she had to say!

Age: 31 (my lucky number)

Profession: Floral Designer

Something people don’t know about you: I rode a bull in college (a real one)

 1. How did you get started in your field?

I took a few floral design classes at Cal Poly, SLO and always dreamed of my starting my own floral design business, but went into corporate event planning at Pebble Beach Resorts instead.  My favorite part was always the table design & florals so when I started thinking about starting a family, I figured it was a great time to branch out on my own.  My thought was I could still work doing something I love while raising a family.  (not as easy as I thought – but oh so worth it)

2. What is a typical day look like for you?

1. wake up, shower if I’m lucky…COFFEE

2. check emails, make the kiddos breakfast…COFFEE

3. Drop Luke at Preschool & Charlotte at daycare (only have daycare Thurs & Fri)

4. Get a venti green iced tea (no sweetener) & head to the studio to prep/design

Wednesdays: Usually get my delivery & prep flowers/vases

Thursdays: Spend all day designing centerpieces & other florals

Fridays: Bouquets, boutonnieres & other personals

Saturdays: Delivery/Install – nothing better than a happy Bride with a huge smile on her face when she sees her bouquet!

5. Try to sit down in front of my laptop to answer as many emails as I can

6. Pick up the kiddos, dinner, walk/scooter ride around the neighborhood, bath-time, read stories & put the babes down for the night

7. Clean up as much as I can & try to have adult conversation time with my handsome hubs

8. Back to emails, proposals, orders and correspondence (hopefully with a glass of wine)

9. Wake-up – REPEAT.

3. What is the best advice you ever received?

I’ve received a lot, people LOVE to give mothers & business owners un-solicited advice!  But the best that I’ve taken away is to be happy with what I have and to live in the moment.  I know it sounds cliche, but it isn’t always easy to remember.  I am always thinking about what I have to do (orders, emails, cleaning), sometimes it is hard to be present with my family & friends.  I have really tried to implement living in the moment & it has helped tremendously.  When I am with my babies, I am WITH my babies – no sense in thinking about an email that I can’t write while I am at the park.  Finding that balance has been critical in my every day happiness, although it will always be a struggle.

4. Who/what inspires you?

That is a hard one, I feel like I am constantly looking around for inspiration – it is at your finger tips with social media, landscaping around town, color palettes that catch my eye in random places and people.

Professionally, other florists inspire me – I am constantly looking to grow and find tips that will help me both on the business & creative side.  It is fun to see what the other florists are doing in my same position.  It is a cool thing to support each other and still inspire each other to be better.  There is definitely a lot of competition, but I only take on one wedding a weekend, so I am always looking for other florists to refer Brides to, and have floral friends that do the same for me.  There are so many creative folks in this industry, would be fun to start a forum where we all feel we can go to support, grow & network with each other.

Personally, my friends inspire me, I have a great group of girlfriends that have similar parenting styles – we are constantly supporting each other while our kids play and start their own lifelong friendships.  We chat about parenting, recipes, and what we have going on in our lives.  My friends that don’t have babies also inspire me with fun stories, fashion tips and their business goals.  And always my Mom – couldn’t do life without her support, she is a beautiful and intelligent woman who raised me while having a successful career.  She taught me my work-ethic and parenting skills and is there for me at ALL times.  She helps with my kiddos, my business and my sanity – and she always looks pulled together, definitely an inspiration to age with such grace. I am extremely lucky to have such strong, beautiful women in my life.

5. What advice would you give your 23 year old self?

So much!  If I knew then, what I know now…

Honestly, it scares me to think about what advice I would give myself.  I have learned so much the hard way and a lot the easy way and wouldn’t change a thing from where I am today.

But some things that would have been helpful is to tell myself to take the time to keep in touch with the people that matter the most, even if there is only time for a 5-minute phone call.  I would tell myself to not take things so personally, and to travel more!  It gets a lot harder when you have a business and small children!

6. What are some goals you have set for yourself in the next year?

I have worked hard on a lot of goals both personally & professionally this year, mostly with trying to organize my life (thank you Life in Jeneral!!!!!)  Having a clean, organized space has helped immensely with my productivity & sanity.

My main goal this year is to continue to find balance.  A few short term goals to help me achieve Balance are to:

~ meal plan: i have a feeling this will be life-changing

~ create a strict schedule:  i have always fought against this, but i think it is the only way i can be productive with work, live a healthy lifestyle and raise my kids with creativity, love & meaning.

~ plan vacations: last year, we didn’t vacation at all, this year we have several small trips planned & I think it is extremely important for family bonding & memory making

~ wake-up early: so that I can bust out a lot of the items hanging over my head before my kids wake up & my busy day starts!
